How to: crocheted Puli

If you liked the little crocheted Puli we presented a while ago, and you have since wondered how was it made - the wait is over! Below you can find the detailed instructions to crochet our mascot. Bring the hooks!

Materials you'll need

  • black cotton yarn
  • a crotchet hook, one size smaller than recommended to make it tight enough
  • a large-eyed crewel needle or upholstery needle
  • stuffing, e.g. wool, wadmal or leftover yarn
  • white felt, scissors, glue

Creating the body parts

Base of the puli:

  • 1st ring: make 2 chain stitches (image 1.) and make six single crochets into the first (farther from the hook). Create a ring with a slip stitch at the end. (6 single crochets) (image 2.)

  • 2nd ring: start with a double crochet and then crochet 2 chain stitches into every stitch below. Close it with a slip stitch. (12 chain stitches) (image 3.)

  • 3rd ring: start with a double crochet and then crochet 2 chain stitches into the first stitch, 1 chain stitch into the second stitch below; repeat these two steps six times. Close it with a slip stitch. (18 chain stitches)
  • 4th ring: start with a double crochet and then crochet 2 chain stitches into the first stitch, 1 chain stitches each into the next two stitches below; repeat these three steps six times. Close it with a slip stitch. (24 chain stitches)
  • 5th ring: start with a double crochet and then crochet 2 chain stitches into the first stitch, 1 chain stitches each into the next three stitches below; repeat these four steps six times. Close it with a slip stitch. (30 chain stitches)
  • Cut the yarn at at least 20-25 cm from the last stitch then pull through the free end in it tightly. Put the base away. (image 4.)

Body of the puli:

  • 1-5th rings: same as for the base.
  • 6-15th rings: continue with the same number of chain stitches. Start each ring with a double crochet and end with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn and tie it up. Put the body away. (image 5.)

Ears, arms, legs, tail:

  • Crochet different number (5-10) of stitches turn at the end, do either 1-2 double or treble crochets and/or 1-2 chain stitches and continue with slip stitches til the end where cut the yarn with 5-6 cm margin and knot it. Make seven of such extensions. The individual sizes may be completely different, feel free to experiment. (image 6.)

Assembly

  • Attach the ears, legs, arms and tail to the body from the outside. Pull the loose yarn ends into the inside of the body with a large needle or with the hook and attach them frimly.
  • Stuff the body (image 7.) and attach it to the base. Either sew them together with the long loose end or crochet them with slip stitches. (image 8.)

  • Cut out the noose an mouth from the felt. Apply glue, press them to the desired position and wait until it dries. (image 9.)

The Puli is now ready. If you would like to use it as a key-holder, attach a keyring to the body before stuffing.

Additional notes:

  • The starting crochet is not equivalent with the first chain stitch of the lines!
  • You may crochet in a spiral instead of rings: in this case the lines (rings) do not need to be attached, the first chain slip directly follows the last chain slip of the preceeding line. (It it helpful to mark the first chain slip.)
  • We used Bóbita yarn, a Hungarian brand which resulted a 4-5 cm tall Puli.
