The cooperation of the THE Roadshow and Puli Space went on! Members of the team were this time in high-schools at Szombathely, Budapest and Monor.

Márton Deák was first at Budapest, and then at Monor. He was speaking about the history of space sciences and the future of lunar exploration. He told some interesting facts about the American and Soviet space program and the Space Race – during the presentation he asked some questions and the correctly answering students won a chocolate bar! At the end, he presented GLXP, Puli Space and the ongoing drawing competition of the team.

At Szombathely Csilla Orgel was speaking about Mars. During her lecture she highlighted the similarities of Mars and Earth, by presenting some earth-like forms of Mars, like rock glaciers. She also presented the future of Mars exploration, and the possibilities of extraterrestrial life.

Márton Deák

Csilla Orgel held a presentation at Friday, 11. 12. 2010. at Kiskőrös (Hungary) with the title “Nearing to the Moon”. She was the presenter of the annual meeting of the Hungarian Astronomical Assosiation Kiskőrös Group. After her show the TWAN exhibition was opened, and at the end a presentation of the sky (with a telescope) was held.

She talked about the Moon in general, the space race, the ongoing researches and new results in space sciences, and of course about the Puli and the GLXP. The presentation was 50-60 minutes long, the audience was clearly interested.

I find it hard to summarize my experiences at the first Budapest TEDx Youth conference. It was the meetup of extraordinary young minds who all take part in very special, unusual activities. These youngsters would like to make the world a better place, and dare to chase their wildest dreams, like the Puli team when they reach for the Moon. I feel that we have all learned something from each other during the preparation and finally at the presentations, and we have all gained special memories from the event. I hope there will be a follow up of this event and others will also get touched by this spirit.

On the 16th of October, Team Puli has held its first telescopic Moon-presentation. Enthused by the all-week-long sunshine, we had been waiting for the weekend, hoping that we will be able to show not just the clouds, but the Moon to the people in the street. The gods tried to ruin our plans, since Saturday morning when we woke up the weather was cloudy. After a quick crisis-discussion we had changed our schedule and because of the bad weather we invited people for a meeting. On the way to our destination many of us had seen our target appearing from the clouds, so we started to hope that we will be able to show the people where are we planning to send the Puli.

By the time we set up our type 200/1000 Newton telescope and unpacked the giveaways at the terminus of the tram, the Moon appeared over the Danube. We quickly adjusted the telescope just when the first people started appearing, who were wondering what these people are doing with this strange device. The presentation had started at 19:00 and lasted until 21:00. During this time the people were coming continuously, and according to our rough estimation, around 150 people saw our heavenly companion, in an extraordinary magnification. Every age-group represented itself, from the grannies to the toddlers, who were lifted up by their fathers to the ocular. What was common in them, is that all of them were fascinated by the spectacle. During that time the members of our team were explaining the people what Puli is, and of course we also presented some facts about the Moon, not to leave out the opportunity for some education. With the help of a map we showed the possible landing sites, which could also be identified with the telescope. Many who were interested also supported the fund of the registration fee with cash, we would like to express our thanks to them. Altogether the evening passed in good spirit, and we hope we have given the people a long-lasting experience and we hope to meet again at our next presentation.

At 27th October, in the framework of the nation-wide Hungarian scientific public outreach program - the “THE Roadshow” - Team Puli held its first educational lecture in a secondary school, at the I. Béla High School, Szekszárd. It was presented by the leader of the team’s Education and Public Outreach department, Márton Deák.

The topic of his presentation was the history of space sciences in the last 70 years, including the rockets of World War II, the first space probes, the lunar space missions of the XXI. century, and the role of famous Hungarians in the American space industry, like Theodore von Kármán and Ferenc Pavlics. In the end Márton presented the GLXP, Team Puli, and the imminent drawing competition of Team Puli.

One of the other lecturers of the road-show presented the career opportunities and the brief history of the pharmaceutical industry, and another one gave a 45 minutes long interactive show about the spectacular and interesting side of physics. The students enjoyed the show very much!

Team Puli agreed with the organizers of THE Roadshow that in the future other members of the team would give more lectures in a wider spectrum of topics.

On the 13th of October Team Puli made an agreement with Szaniszló Bérczi, leader of the Hunveyor space probe program: We will make the newest member of the Hunveyor-series, number 15. The first appearance of the “Hunveyor 15 – Puli 1” will be on the 20th of November at the “RobotNap” event of the John von Neumann Computer Society. This is one of the events held during the celebrations for Eötvös Loránd University’s 375th founding anniversary.

The Hunveyor is a 13 year old university program  based on the original Surveyor-probes. The goal of the project is to show how scientific studies can be carried out on another planet using a remote controlled lander.

24. September 2010. 2pm, Millenáris Park, Budapest. Hall „B” is still empty, only a few exhibitors are present this early. They are searching for wall sockets, adjusting the tables, and thinking how many attendants will come and what will they say if somebody asks something they don’t know the answer for.

3pm, the doors are open. At first only a few people are coming in, but later more and even more. The Puli stall is easy to find, just in front of the entrance, a colorful video is also showing our presence. They are halting, watching the video, looking at the interactive Moon-map (some even find the landing site of the Puli), and then a discussion begins.

The first questions are mainly: “Who are you? How will you get the money? How will you get there?”. Then the eager team members are starting to explain, show images and give “Lousy”, our demorover to the children. More videos are coming, along with desing-plans and webpages. 5 minutes later the attendant understands everything. He stays 10 minutes more, listens to us, nods, asks about the details and leaves, but before that he says something very important: “Good luck to you! We’re pulling for you!”
